How to Choose the Right Candle Size for Your Room

How to choose the right candle size for your room by S7 Home Fragrances

Match Size to Room, Not Just Preference

It's tempting to always reach for the biggest candle available, assuming more wax means more value — but scent throw doesn't scale simply with size. A large candle in a small room can be genuinely too much, while a small candle in an open-plan space may barely register.

Rough guide by room type:

  • Small rooms (bathrooms, hallways, small bedrooms): a mid-size candle or a wax melt is usually plenty — these spaces hold scent well without needing much
  • Medium rooms (standard bedrooms, home offices): a mid-size candle (our standard 30cl) is the natural fit for most people
  • Large or open-plan rooms (living/kitchen-diners): consider two mid-sized candles or a reed diffuser placed in different spots so scent doesn't just pool near one source

Ceiling Height and Airflow Matter Too

Room size on the floor plan isn't the whole story — a room with high ceilings holds more air overall, so scent can feel thinner even in a modestly-sized room. Similarly, open doors, hallways connecting rooms, and air vents all spread scent thinner than a similarly-sized closed room would.

If your space has high ceilings or lots of airflow: you may need two mid-sized candles or a diffuser than the floor size alone would suggest.

Consider How Long You Want It to Last, Not Just How Strong

Size also affects burn time, which matters for how often you're replacing a candle. A smaller candle burning frequently in a well-loved room may need replacing more often than expected — worth factoring into which size actually suits your habits, not just the room itself.

When to Choose Multiple Formats Instead of One Bigger Candle

Sometimes the better answer isn't a bigger candle at all — it's layering formats. A reed diffuser running quietly in a large room, topped up with a candle lit in the evening, often gives a more even, consistent fragrance than one oversized candle working alone.

Our Recommendation

If you're unsure, it's usually safer to slightly undersize than oversize — a candle that's a touch too subtle can be supplemented with a wax melt or a second candle, but an overwhelming scent in a small space is much harder to dial back once it's burning.

All of our candles, diffusers and wax melts are hand-poured or hand-filled in Scotland using GMO-free soy wax, and are vegan-friendly and cruelty-free.
